NABEEL AHMED

Nabeel is the President and Treasurer of the Tessellate Institute. He joined TTI in 2011, leading the ‘Giving Ourselves a Voice’ filmmaking workshop before joining the board in 2014. Outside of TTI, Nabeel is an urban policy analyst and researcher focusing on smart cities and social enterprise. He is currently a Smart Cities Analyst with Open North, and has over eight years of experience in the not-for-profit and international development sector. Nabeel was selected as an Aga Khan Foundation Canada Fellow in 2013-2014 and has degrees in urban planning, public administration, and business administration. @ns_ahmed

nadiya 

NADIYA ALI

Nadiya is a PhD Candidate specializing in Political Sociology at York University. She brings extensive applied research and analysis experience, and has been part of a range of community-based research and programming initiatives in the GTA. Nadiya is passionate about impactful research and periodically publishes Op-ed pieces on issues of race, identity and social justice. Prior to her doctorate work, Nadiya has done graduate work both at Carleton University and SOAS-University of London in politics and international relations. Additionally, Nadiya holds an Honours BA from the University of Toronto. Currently, her doctorate focuses on exploring issues revolving around identity, belonging, resistance and marginalization.

ARIJ ELMI

Arij Elmi is a PhD candidate at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education and a junior fellow at Massey College at the University of Toronto. She holds a bachelor and master degree in social work and is a clinician at Hard Feelings Mental Health. Arij is an instructor with Wen-Do Women’s Self-Defence where she focuses on Muslim/immigrant women and survivors of childhood sexual violence. She serves as a board member at Hard Feelings Mental Health and Wen-Do Women’s Self-Defence.

ROSHAN A. JAHANGEER

Roshan Arah Jahangeer is currently a Ph.D. candidate (ABD) in the department of Political Science at York University, and a Course Director in the department of Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies at York’s bilingual campus, Glendon College. She was previously a research fellow at the Tessellate Institute from 2014 to 2017. Her doctoral research explores the transnational circulation of anti-veiling laws between France and Québec in the contexts of secularism, feminism, colonialism and islamophobia.

SHAZLIN RAHMAN

Shazlin Rahman is a Malaysian-born, Toronto-based city-builder, community organizer and freelance writer. Shazlin holds a B.A. in Journalism from Wilfrid Laurier University and a Masters in Communication and Culture at Ryerson University. In her current role at the Inspirit Foundation, she supports the creation of communications strategies and provides support to the organization’s grantees and network of young change leaders. Prior to moving to Canada, Shazlin studied architecture in Malaysia and Australia. She brings together her passion for city-building and equity through urban affairs writing focused on how Muslims, and Muslim women in particular, experience urban spaces. @shazlin_r
